What is “A week In the life…” Elementary flat classroom project? It provides upper elementary age children the opportunity to share cultural experiences with other children around the globe. Students in mixed classroom teams share digital artifacts about their culture on a wiki and discuss different aspects of daily life such as celebrations, clothing, housing, and transportation on voicethread. A teacher mentor is in charge of each category to keep the group of students focused. At the end of each project the groups combine their information together to make one big project and then they share it using voicethread.
How did it get started? With the success of the other flat classroom projects for highclass students. The teachers wanted the elementary students to be able to take part in the flat class room projects. So, beginning in October 2010 to February 2011 there were eight international schools that joined together and created this project.
As of right now, the different schools that are participating in this project are; Yew Chung International School, Beijing, China - International School of Prague, Prague, Czech Republic - Yarmouth Elementary, Yarmouth, Maine, USA - The Phoenix School ,Salem, MA USA - Denton Avenue School, New Hyde Park, NY USA - Mill Creek School, Illinois, USA - The Falcons School for Girls, West London, England - American School of Bombay, Mumbai, India.
I think this project is absolutely amazing. I did not know about this until I started doing research on it for this assignment. It’s a great way for students to expand their minds and learn how other students live from around the world. You don’t really stop and think about how other people live that are not from around here, but with this project they can learn. They can also learn all of this by sitting in their desks at school. It gives the students something fun and educational to do. I hope that one day this project will expand to more schools and open the minds of their students to think outside the box of how other students live.
I wish I would have been able to do this when I was a kid in school. It would have been one of those experiences I would have never forgotten. It would have also made going to school a lot more fun, because I would have been looking forward to the class I was doing this in.
